10 Years of Poetry in Motion®

The poem as it appears on transit vehicles

For ten years, Poetry in Motion® brought poetry into the lives of TriMet MAX and bus riders. The poems were the work of local and national poets. TriMet partnered with the non-profit arts organization Literary Arts, Inc. to make riding the MAX and bus a more pleasurable experience. Other sponsors included Lamar Advertising and the Poetry Society of America.

In 2007, six new selections appeared. They were found on buses and MAX trains throughout the Portland metro area.

Poetry in Motion® was developed by the Poetry Society of America and the MTA New York City Transit in 1992. Inspired by a similar program in the London Underground, Poetry in Motion placed poems in the spaces usually reserved for advertisements in trains and buses. Since its founding, the program expanded to 15 cities across the country, reaching an estimated 15 million people daily.
