10 Years of Poetry in Motion®
For ten years, Poetry in Motion® has brought poetry into the lives of TriMet MAX and bus riders. The poems are the work of local and national poets. TriMet continues to partner with the non-profit arts organization Literary Arts, Inc. to make riding the MAX and bus a more pleasurable experience. Other sponsors include Lamar Advertising and the Poetry Society of America.
In 2007, six new selections appear. They can be found on buses and MAX trains throughout the Portland metro area.
Poetry in Motion® was developed by the Poetry Society of America and the MTA New York City Transit in 1992. Inspired by a similar program in the London Underground, Poetry in Motion places poems in the spaces usually reserved for advertisements in trains and buses. Since its founding, the program has expanded to 15 cities across the country, reaching an estimated 15 million people daily.
