40 New Buses Join the TriMet Fleet

New Flyer 2900 Series buses are replacing some of our oldest vehicles

This month, 40 new buses are being added to the TriMet fleet. They will replace some of our oldest buses, which are nearly 20 years old.

The 2900 Series bus, made by New Flyer, offers the latest in technology, fuel efficiency and emissions. And it'll soon be hitting the streets.

With an updated profile, these buses are more aerodynamic than previous models. But the biggest changes are inside and under the hood.

There are more handholds for riders who are standing, and more on-board cameras to improve security. These buses also have a reader board and a speaker system for automatic stop announcements.
  • For the operator, there are now adjustable pedals for the throttle and brake, as well as electric-assist power steering and a smaller 16-inch steering wheel. Cornering lights on the side of the bus make it easier to see pedestrians at the curb or in the crosswalk.
  • For the workers who clean the buses, a supplemental heating system helps them stay warm without actually running the engine.

  • And when it comes to reducing emissions, a high-tech exhaust filter keeps harmful particulates from polluting the air.

We expect to have all of the new buses on the road by the end of March 2009.
