TriMet winter weather tips

New this year 1 phone number: 503-238-RIDE

Winter storms are in the forecasts, and TriMet typically carries many new riders when bad weather strikes. Here are some tips for riders who are unfamiliar with TriMet.

TriMet provides constant updates on the status of MAX and bus lines at:

  • trimet.org - See if MAX and bus lines are affected by snow or ice and view bus detour maps on routes that are most likely affected by snow. Detours are posted as changes occur.

  • 503-238-RIDE - TriMet's recorded message line gives information on snow routes 24 hours a day. Between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, you can reach a customer service representative for additional assistance.

Rider tips:

  • Buses travel slower and are not on schedule, but arrive at regular intervals.

  • Dress warmly & stay visible: wave to the operator to help them see you and carry a small flashlight or strobe.

  • Wait on flat ground: If your bus stop is on a hill, walk to the bottom or top since buses can’t stop on a hill.

  • Walk to a stop on a busy street if no traffic going by your bus stop.

  • Stand on the curb: until buses come to a complete stop. Buses may not pull up to the curb in order to prevent damaging tire chains, so you may have to step into the street to board.

  • TriMet volunteers will be at major transit centers to assist riders.
