TriMet applies for noise variance for Portland Mall project
Hearing set for August 9th
TriMet is applying for a noise variance for construction of the Portland Mall MAX Light Rail Project. The project is part of the 8.3-mile I-205/Portland Mall MAX Light Rail Project that will extend light rail to Clackamas County and along 5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland.
TriMet is seeking a noise variance from the city of Portland to allow some evening and weekend work in the Central Business District over a 26-month period between September 2006 and November 2008. The night and weekend work will facilitate some public utility relocation work and speed civil (track and streetscape) construction by shortening the length of activity on each block, minimizing its impact to nearby businesses. TriMet and its contractor, Stacy and Witbeck/Kiewit Joint Venture, will work with the City to mitigate the effect of construction noise.
Portland Mall construction highlights:
- Public utility relocation work begins in September 2006; track and streetscape construction will begin in early 2007
- No construction will occur during holiday moratoriums in the Central Mall between W Burnside and SW Jefferson streets
- Construction will occur in three work zones simultaneously – one in each of the North, Central and South mall areas
- Track and streetscape work in each zone will be done in 3-4 block segments and last up to eight weeks
- Crews will work double shifts to speed construction – 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Business access will remain open during business hours
- TriMet will give nearby businesses and residents advance notice of night work
