Construction updates on I-205 Light Rail Project

Work continues in multiple areas

Construction on the 6.5-mile I-205 Light Rail Project is underway. Much of the work is taking place within the existing transitway adjacent to I-205. Work includes the construction of seven bridges and one undercrossing to allow trains to run in a separate right-of-way. Most work will take place on weekdays with occasional night and weekend work.

SE Stark & Washington streets

  • Two lanes are closed on Stark between SE 94th and SE 102nd through July 20th.
  • Two lanes are closed on Washington St between SE 94th and SE 102nd through August 15th.
  • One northbound lane will be closed intermittently at the I-205 on-ramp at Stark through winter 2008.

SE Powell Blvd night work

  • Work closes the I-205 southbound off ramp to Powell Blvd nightly after 8 p.m. through mid-July.
  • Motorists will be detoured to the Division St off ramp.

SE Powell Blvd bridge construction

  • Crews are excavating, building bridge abutments and installing a storm sewer pipe.
  • Work will last about one year.
  • Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures and delays throughout the summer.

Harold St

  • Bridge construction continues just west of the I-205 overpass with crews building concrete bridge abutments.
  • Work will close the shoulder and bike lane in the westbound lanes intermittently.
  • Bridge girders are scheduled to be set the week of June 25th, which may cause intermittent nighttime street closures.

SE Foster Rd and Woodstock St

  • Crews are driving pile through Tuesday, June 19th.
  • Motorists can expect delays and lane closures through January 2008.
  • ODOT’s multi-use path is closed from Foster Rd to Flavel St through January 2008. An alternative route that parallels I-205 is available.

Flavel St

  • Excavation and utility relocation continues.
  • Motorists can expect intermittent single lane closures through winter 2008.

SE 92nd and Crystal Springs Blvd

  • Motorists can expect a single northbound lane closure on SE 92nd the week of June 18th. At that time the northbound SE 92nd Ave bike path will be closed. Bicyclists will need to merge with traffic. Pedestrians will have sidewalk access.

Alternative route for multi-use path

In July an alternate route will extend south from SE Caruthers St to SE Sunnyside Blvd near Clackamas Town Center. The alternative route will be available to pedestrians, cyclists and users of mobility devices.

  • Provides continuous north-south throughway.
  • Runs primarily on SE 92nd Avenue, which at SE Otty Road in Clackamas County becomes SE Bob Schumacher Road and later turns into SE Stevens Road.
  • From SE Cooper and SE Cora, cyclists have the option to use a marked bike boulevard that runs between 87th and 89th avenues. Riders should follow city signs and striping.

About the project

TriMet's fifth MAX line will add light rail between Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center and to 5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland between Union Station and Portland State University (PSU). It is the first light rail extension into Clackamas County, it will serve the heart of downtown Portland and the busiest transit destination in the TriMet system - PSU. When it opens in September 2009, it will help revitalize the Mall and poise the region for future rail extensions, such as to Milwaukie and Vancouver, Washington.
