TriMet's I-bike-205 Party on Pedals event July 13

Ride the alternate multi-use path during light rail construction

TriMet's I-bike-205, a Party on Pedals event on Friday, July 13th, will introduce an alternate multi-use path along I-205. The alternate path is available during I-205 light rail construction. Work will close the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) the multi-use path that parallels I-205.

About I-bike-205

The seven-mile ride will start at 5:30 p.m. from Portland Adventist Academy's front parking lot at SE 96th Ave, just south of Mall 205. Participants can check in as early as 5 p.m. and we encourage riders to bike to the start. The finish line party starts at 7 p.m. in front of the Macy's Home Store at the north end of the Clackamas Town Center parking lot. The cycling event features food, entertainment and prizes. I-bike-205 is free and open to riders 18 and older accustomed to riding on city streets.

Food will be provided for all riders at the finish line and we'll be giving away a number of prizes including:

  • Trek Lime bike from Bike Gallery
  • Pink Martini concert tickets
  • TriMet monthly passes
  • Clackamas Town Center gift card
  • Two entries into Cycle Oregon’s 2008 Weekend Ride
  • Bike tune-ups
  • Cycling club memberships

Alternative route

The route will extend south from SE Caruthers St to SE Sunnyside Blvd near Clackamas Town Center. The alternative route will be available to pedestrians, cyclists and users of mobility devices.

  • Provides continuous north-south throughway.
  • Runs primarily on SE 92nd Avenue, which at SE Otty Road in Clackamas County becomes SE Bob Schumacher Road and later turns into SE Stevens Road.
  • From SE Cooper and SE Cora, cyclists have the option to use a marked bike boulevard that runs between 87th and 89th avenues. Riders should follow city signs and striping.

At the end of the two-year construction period two improved options will be available along the 6.5-mile corridor: the upgraded ODOT multi-use path and the new alternative route.

2009 Improvements to the ODOT path:

  • Direct access to eight new MAX stations and five Park & Ride lots along the I-205 Light Rail line.
  • A new-elevated crossing will be constructed over SE Foster Road and SE Woodstock Blvd, increasing continuity for pedestrians, cyclists and users of mobility devices.
  • Improved landscaping and better lighting at station areas.
  • New sound walls to decrease noise levels from I-205.

About the project

TriMet's fifth MAX extension will add light rail between Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center, and to 5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland between Union Station and Portland State University (PSU). It is the first light rail extension into Clackamas County, it will serve the heart of downtown Portland and the busiest transit destination in the TriMet system - PSU. When it opens in September 2009, it will help revitalize the Mall and poise the region for future rail extensions, such as to Milwaukie and Vancouver, Washington.
