March ridership report with MAX and WES rides increasing

8.6 million transit trips taken in March and WES sets new record

There were 8.6 million trips taken on buses, MAX and WES trains in March 2011, down 1.4 percent from March 2010. MAX Green Line and WES Commuter Rail saw double-digit increases, and for the first time in five months, rush hour trips increased for all modes. Ridership figures below are compared to March 2010.

Bus, MAX & WES

  • Weekly trips were down 1.5 percent, to 1,916,000 trips
  • Weekday trips were down 0.5 percent to 316,500 trips
  • Weekend trips were down 5.8 percent to 333,400 trips
  • Rush hour trips were up 1.5 percent to 100,520 trips

Bus

  • Weekly bus trips declined 2.6 percent to 1,138,500 trips
  • Weekday bus trips declined 1.8 percent to 192,000 trips
  • Weekend bus trips were down 6.4 percent to 178,500 trips
  • Rush hour bus trips were up 0.2 percent to 62,600 trips

MAX

  • Weekly MAX trips were flat with 769,900 trips
  • Weekday MAX trips were up 1.4 percent to 123,000 trips
  • Weekend trips were down 5.1 percent to 154,900 trips
  • Rush hour trips were up 3.1 percent to 36,400 trips

MAX Green Line

  • Weekday trips averaged 21,700, up 13.6 percent
  • Weekend trips averaged 24,100, up 2.6 percent

WES

  • Weekly WES trips increased 23.6 percent to 7,600 trips
  • Weekday/rush hour trips increased 23.6 percent to 1,520 boardings
