TriMet changes MAX station name to reflect new stadium name
April 13, 2011
TriMet expects more than 8,000 Timbers fans will use transit for opening game; transit plan includes extra trains, express buses
TriMet this week changed the PGE Park MAX station to reflect the new name of the stadium: JELD-WEN Field. The MAX station name change took place in advance of the first Timbers home game on April 14.
Not all signage or train announcements will be changed immediately. It takes about six weeks to program the 127 trains in TriMet’s fleet to reflect the new name of the station in audio announcements and on internal digital displays. Printed materials including schedules and system maps will be updated in September when other schedule changes are made. Portland Timbers are covering the cost of changing all of the signage and train announcements.
TriMet service for Timbers game
TriMet will provide extra service for riders getting to and from the game on April 14 and other games throughout the season. There will be additional trains and express bus service for riders coming from downtown and outlying areas.
TriMet estimates about 8,000 Timbers fans to take transit to and from the game. With this volume of riders, especially with all game goers leaving the stadium at once, TriMet offers several options:
MAX and express buses
- Extra Blue and Red line trains will be inserted into regular schedules before and after the game.
- MAX Green and Yellow line riders can transfer to an express bus to/from JELD-WEN Field
- Express buses to the game will pick up passengers across from MAX stations at Mall/SW 5th Ave, Galleria/SW 10th Ave and dropping off at JELD-WEN Field.
- After the game, riders can take the express bus from the stadium to three MAX stations: Library/SW 9th Ave, Pioneer Square South and Mall/SW 4th Ave to get to parking garages or connect with Green or Yellow line trains.
- Express bus trips are $2 each way, unless riders already have valid fare.
- Bus stops are near the designated parking lots for the Timbers.
- With maximum capacity on trains for large events being about 300, riders should be prepared for up to an hour wait on the platforms after the game.
- Riders can also walk to SW 6th Avenue and catch a Green or Yellow line train to travel east across the river.
Station closed
For safety, TriMet will close the King’s Hill/SW Salmon St MAX station across from the stadium for 90 minutes before and after the game. The station platform is narrow, and closing the station helps ensure large crowds stay out of the street.
Fares
JELD-WEN Field is outside the Free Rail Zone. Valid fare is required to and from the stadium, including on express buses. Fares for express buses are $2 each way, unless riders have a valid fare. Riders coming from west of Sunset Transit Center and east of Gateway Transit Center are encouraged to purchase day tickets for round-trip travel to the game. TriMet customer service staff will be at key locations – primarily downtown – to help guide riders and sell fares.
