Planning and Design

Before construction can start on the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project, planning and design of the trackway, stations and multi-use bridge must be completed.

Project Status

In March 2009, the Federal Transit Administration approved TriMet's entry into Preliminary Engineering for the project. This approval allows TriMet to bring the project design from 10 percent to 30 percent, with costs related to the design work paid for by the project. The PE phase of the project will last into 2010. Final design will occur in 2010-2012.

Metro is leading the effort to complete the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS).

The project Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) was completed in November 2008. A Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) alignment and station plan was chosen in the summer of 2008.

A Multi-Use Transit Bridge

A new, multi-use transit bridge over the Willamette River will be a major feature of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project. See where the bridge will be built and learn about the bridge selection process.

Station Area Planning

In 2007 and 2008, Metro conducted analysis of proposed station areas along the Southeast Portland, Milwaukie and North Clackamas County portions of the alignment. Existing conditions and public comment reports for these station areas can be accessed below. Further refinement to station area plans will continue during the preliminary and final design phases.
