Portland Mall Construction Update

Progress report

September 1, 2009

The new MAX Green Line will begin service between Portland City Center and Clackamas Town Center on Saturday, September 12 at 11:30 a.m. During the two weeks before service begins, Green Line trains will be performing simulated service on the Mall as required by law—these trains will not be picking up riders.

MAX Yellow Line service has relocated to the Mall, and several bus lines will continue to provide service on 5th and 6th avenues.

Look alive! Pedestrians should stay safe by obeying all signals and using crosswalks. Motorists and cyclists must use the left traffic lane on 5th and 6th avenues, and right turns are prohibited unless signs and signals indicate otherwise. Enforcement of traffic laws is under way. Learn more about traveling safely on the new Mall.

Please note: With the Portland Mall Light Rail Project coming to completion, this is the last construction update.  Thank you for your interest in the progress of the project.

Light rail construction

All major light rail construction is complete on 5th and 6th avenues.

Station finishing/art installation

Components of the new bus and MAX shelters are appearing throughout the Mall. The new shelters will offer passengers better visibility, better lighting and real-time arrival information displays. Benches have been furnished in the South and Central malls. Crews are adding Transit Tracker screens and will soon erect windscreens. Shelter roofs are being added to bus stops first, then the light rail stations. Art installations also continue along the Mall and bike oases will be completed in September

Morrison & Yamhill brick intersections

Brick intersection repairs along Morrison and Yamhill streets will continue through November. Work includes removing, replacing and repairing subgrade and mortar set pavers. The work takes place Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Some parking temporarily will be removed. Morrison and Yamhill will be closed around the specific areas under construction but local access will be provided.  At least one lane on cross streets will remain open. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed. These repairs are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
