Text transcript of this episode
TriMet is improving security on the transit system to help keep you safe.
We recently hired 16 new security guards, for a total of 36.
These men and women provide a security presence throughout the system, while assisting fare inspectors, police and TriMet staff when necessary.
You may have noticed more Transit Police officers riding MAX.
The number of officers will increase by 10 percent, and will expand by another 10 percent when the new MAX Green Line opens in 2009.
And for people who don't pay their fare, we've adopted a zero-tolerance policy.
Fred Hansen, TriMet General Manager: "Today I am setting a standard of zero-tolerance for fare evaders. You are going to see much more visible fare inspection throughout the system.
We will supplement our fare inspector staff with police and rail supervisory personnel. This is a warning to the fare evaders and cheats. Your free ride on TriMet is about to end."
To address the problems with broken ticket machines, our on-street crews have stepped up maintenance to avoid breakdowns.
And we'll begin installing more reliable credit card readers this summer.
Plus, you now have the option of buying your fare from participating nearby vendors at major MAX stations.
We've upgraded the lighting along the eastside MAX line to meet today's security standards.
At the 82nd Avenue and Gresham Central stations, we added new floodlights and trimmed tree branches to improve visibility.
In addition, we've set a goal to remove all graffiti within 24 hours whenever possible.
These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to make TriMet safe, inviting and comfortable for everyone.
